Firewalls and their false sense of security
Published March 13th, 2006 in Firewalls, SecurityMost business owners are fairly satisfied with their security when they’ve had a firewall installed and antivirus software installed.
First, they probably don’t have a firewall that could really hold up to an attack, or a proactive network security program that ensures their firewall is actually working. I find that most SMBs select firewalls based on Best Buy’s current circular.
But evidence is mounting that the greater threat is now inside the network.
Employees are now regarded as a greater danger to workplace cyber security than the gangs of hackers and virus writers launching targeted attacks from outside the firewall.
That is the perception of 75 per cent of Australian information technology managers who took part in an international IBM security survey.
With email and instant messaging proving increasingly popular and devices such as laptop computers, mobile phones and USB storage devices more commonplace in the office, the opportunities for workplace crime are growing.
Script kiddies don’t stay in school forever. Soon they’ll be working for you and once they’re bored with that, guess who’s system will be the object of their hackable affections.
Protect BOTH sides of your network!
